Wild and Woolly Yarns Visit
11 January 2012

Vicki and Andy visited Fran Stafford at Wild and Woolly Yarns in Devonport, Auckland.  What a great little (big really!) stash of yarns and loads of in-house patterns to try. We felt a little guilty as with the (temporary?) closure of QualitYarns New Zealand ... our mill ... we have no fresh supplies to offer to the limited stock Fran currently holds of our alpaca yarns.

Fran was good enough to allow us to offer one of those patterns for any yarn sales ... her choice was a Baby's First Jacket ... if you use our 4-ply yarns then you only need one hank for the smaller sizes in that pattern (0-3 and 3-6 months).  Comes free with any yarn sales ... for the next few months!  Great choice of pattern as is a straightforward and modern design by one of Fran's designers - Vicki Stewart!

So if you are in Auckland take the ferry to Devonport and Wild & Woolly Yarns is straight off the ferrry on Victoria Road - about 150 meters walk!

Silky Cria - Bleeding Umbilical CordDanessaCria1
31 December 2011

We thankfully spotted new female cria to Silky had a very large umbilical cord which continued to lose blood post birth.  Fishing line and fishing knots came to the rescue and little cria ... as yet un-named ... is now happily feeding from mum!

Christmas Day Cria - little 'Hollee'
25 December 2011

One addition to our alpaca family on a wonderful Christmas Day. Little female cria 'Hollee' was born around noon on Xmas Day to our soft grey girl 'Danessa'. Cria is a charcoal black colour and is already well bonded with mum!

Brian Kitson
22 December 2011

We are sory to hear that Brian Kitson of Adobe Alpaca and the Alpaca Shop in Geraldine has passed away. Brian was instrumental in the creation of the New Zealand Alpaca Association along with many other successes, particularly the world-famous 'Adobe Alpaca' brand of alpaca products various.   Our thoughts are with Maggie and family at this difficult time.

Alpaca Knitting Garment - Susanne Schrader
8 December 2011

Picture right is of a baby garment knitted by Susanne Schrader.  Yarn is our baby blue 100% alpaca yarn in DK (8-ply) also available in 4-ply.  In Susan's words the 'recipient is thrilled with the little outfit'. More details of the yarn see our 'Baby Yarns' page.

Pattern reference for the little sweater is : 'Sports Vee' from 'The third little Sublime hand knit book'  and Susanne's choice for the little pants pattern is 'Tiny Bird Longies' which is a free pattern available online here: tinybirdsorganics.com.  Thanks Susanne for the picture!

Shearing COMPLETESweater 1.JPG
6 December 2011

A few very relieved alpacas have been beautifully shorn over the last few days.  Over 200 alpacas shorn in that period despite some difficult weather on day 3 and 4 so a great job done by James, Roger, Andy, Anne and Liam!  Only old girls Missey and Alice were not shorn this year

So any alpacas now purchased are shorn for the coming summer ... one less thing to worry about!  Check details of young, cuddly alpaca paddock munchers and our selection of females - if the colours don't suit we do have over 100 alpaca options for sale, especially pregnant female options and young alpaca males!

For those loooking to shear their alpaca girls and boys a quick reminder that Nigel Wood will continue to shear through to early January 2012.  Nigel's contact details: Contact details: 03-231 3112, cell 0274-681 903 e-mail: Nigel.Wood@agresearch.co.nz.

Wanaka Show - March 2012
2 December 2011

Although there will not be any alpaca showing at the Upper Clutha A&P Show (Wanaka Show) in March 2012 we will have our stand at the same place at the Show with some real alpacas to meet!  More details of the Show on our Diary page.

Closure - QualitYarns New Zealand Limited
20 November 2011

It is with great disappointment we highlight the closure of QualitYarns New Zealand Limited, Milton. The only fully worsted, worsted and woollen yarn producer in New Zealand gave redundancy notices to all staff on Friday 18 November.  The loss of 23 jobs is very significant for Milton and surrounds.  Our own alpaca yarns were made at QualitYarns and the fleece currently being processed at the Mill will be completed.

But our concern is for the staff at the Mill; we had worked closely with Mike Barra and his highly skilled team over the last 8 years.  It is a very significant loss to yarn suppliers around New Zealand and we are hopeful a large scale client is able to support the Mill. Basically the window of opportunity to save the mill and associated workforce is very short so please contact Mike Barra, the General Manager at QualitYarns, soonest: Mike Barra, QYarns.

Fleece Skirting Training Day
14 November 2011

The Alpaca Association of New Zealand (AANZ) is holding an alpaca fleece skirting day in Christchurch on Sunday 4 December 2012.  More details from the AANZ (www.alpaca.org.nz) and the skirting day - both for show and commercial fleeces - is at the Lesley and Kevin Burgess property.

SHEARING HANDLER required - 4 to 15 December 2011
1 November 2011

Our shearer needs a shearing rousy/handler for the period 4 December to 15 December this year.  This will be a very direct exposure to alpaca shearing, handling and care over the period of 11 days - and a chance to travel around Otago and Southland meeting alpaca breeders.  Be prepared for some very direct alpaca exposure!  Contact Andy for more details!

Shows and Craft Fairs
22 October 2011

Check our DIARY page for details of Craft fairs, markets and Shows we will be attending around New Zealand for Summer 2011 and Autumn 2012.

SHEARING - Spring 2011
14 October 2011

If you are needing shearing this spring we have provided details in our newsletter.  Nigel Wood, the local-based shearer, and his partner are now availabe for a fortnight full-time 19 to 27 November. He will likely shear in the Oamaru area and then Dunedin as he comes south.  A good time to have your shearing out of the way so either make contact with us or direct with Nigel.

Nigel's contact details: Contact details: 03-231 3112, cell 0274-681 903 e-mail: Nigel.Wood@agresearch.co.nz. BOOK EARLY!

Also, Shon Ashi the shearer form last year is back in South Canterbury for 3 years.  He shears both alpacas and llamas so plenty of options.  Shon may be in touch as well as Nigel and his partner.

alpacasRstyle - New Shop in New Plymouth
27 September 2011

Trish and Neil Watson of 'alpacasRstyle' have opened a new shop in New Plymouth!  They are focused on products from their own alpacas and, having transported some of their alpacas, we know their products will be of the same very high quality.  They are also an outlet for our alpaca duvets.  Location for 'alpacasRstyle' is: 680 Hurford Road, New Plymouth, Taranaki - visits and shop opening by appointment: phone: 06-751 2096 or mobile: 021-450 088.  Go visit and take the chance to see and feel the wonderful properties of alpaca.

Alpaca Essentials - Feilding - have MOVED!
26 September 2011

Jenny and Bob Phillips of 'Alpaca Essentials' have moved to a newer, brighter location in Feilding, Manawatu! Just down the road from their old outlet the new store is at 52 Manchester Street, Feilding.  Phone: 06-323 7472.   Our alpaca duvets and yarns are at the shop as well as a host of other New Zealand made alpaca products!  Also, Jenny and Bob are collecting fleece for our duvets ... so lots of reasons to go visit!

Why We Chose Our Multi-Dye Themes?2-plyRibbon2011NR_3.JPG
18 September 2011

Doe Arnot has added some detail on why we choose the dye themes for some of our variegate dyed yarns - see multi-dyed yarns link for more details of those colours.  Doe's discussion is on her blogspot: http://doespins.blogspot.com/. So if you are interested in how we came to choose colourways such as 'Ribbon' (picture right), 'Wild Rice', 'Glacier' and 'Stipple' then please review Doe's discussion and story of our yarns!

New Zealand National Alpaca EXPO 2011
2 September 2011

The New Zealand alpaca Association (AANZ) National Alpaca Show and EXPO 2011 in Tauranga first weekend of October has a great turnout of alpacas.  With 467 alpacas entries (311 huacaya and 156 suri alpaca) this is the biggest turnout by far of alpacas at a New Zealand alpaca show!

We have our products selected for the 'Innovate Alpaca' display - our alpaca duvets use the white and fawn fleece not suited to processing into yarn.  Hence, no lighter coloured fleece is wasted off the alpaca.  Take the chance to view our alpaca quilt and duvet at Innovate Alpaca and feel how soft the hypoallegenic duvets are, and how warm the duvet is for a comfortable nights sleep.

Open Days during Dunedin Pool Games of Rugby World Cup 2011
27 August 2011

We have three Open Days during the Rugby World Cup - a chance to come meet our alpacas and see what we do with the fleece and this inquisitive animals.  More details on our DIARY page but the first is for the Argentine v England game on 10 September.

We NEED More Alpaca Fleece!
26 August 2011

We continue to purchase WHITE and FAWN legs, bellies, necks, skirtings, low grade alpaca blanket/fleece - minimum length 20mm, any micron.  Must be alpaca!  Price for 2011 fleece: $3 per kg (incl GST) - immediate payment, or $4.50 per kg if taking one of our farm vouchers to buy our alpacas or alpaca products!  Minimums of 10kgs please!  This is not the pricing for yarn quality fleece, just the shorter lengths, high veggie matter fleeces, fleeces off older stock and coarser fleece!

Spring is Coming!
24 August 2011

Thanks to the damp autumn our alpacas have had sufficient feed through winter and we are now seeing some spring grass. Keep feeding the hay though ... we are yet to need the baleage (and have plenty to sell!) The only health comment was we have seen coccidia in a few senior alpacas.  Usually it only causes youngsters under stress and problems. Easily treated the clue is fairly acute wasting of body condition.  But the two girls who suffered ... both were still mothering but cria are ok ... are both now looking good on recovery!

NZ Dunkleys Craft Fair Christchurch - What a Turnout!YarnsAug11
22 August 2011

Hello to everyone who visited us at our Dunkleys stand ... great turnout by Christchurch. We hope the tips on dyeing, knitting, weaving, yarns options, free patterns, dye themes and project ideas all proved helpful!?  See everyone next year - think Dunkleys Christchurch will be September 2012!

Monstor Yarn Stash August 2011
4 August 2011

Picture right shows our latest alpaca yarn designs in DK, boucle (just a few), and 4-Ply ... finished July and August 2011.  Some are familiar colours and some fresh colours in colourways Flame, Red Dust, Painted Lake, Fog, Lava, Windsong and Waterfall!  More details on our variegated or multi-dyed web page of the schemes - and we now have better close-ups of the colour schemes.

Or come see them at the Great Dunkleys Craft Fair in Christchurch in the middle of August. We don't yet know our stand number but will add detail when available. Dates on our Diary page.  We do have several open day events over the Rugby World Cup 2011  period here at the alpaca farm too ... visitors welcome!

Snowy Alpacas - meet 'Ebay'!IMG_0852.jpg
25 July 2011

Heavy snow in Dunedin - and picture right shows young 'Ebay' now a little ... whiter ... or grey?  Usually a blue-black male the alpacas had a great time in the snow.

We keep the alpaca metabolism temperature up with plenty of quality meadow hay available.  And despite the cold (we got to -4 degrees) and snow (about 15cms) the alpacas still generally prefer not to go in one of the sheds. So Ebay and friends have a snow covering all through the day and night - the alpaca fleece insulation means the snow does not melt.

Free Knitting Pattern - 'Aviator' by Kiwiyarns Knits
23 July 2011

Wei S. Leong at Kiwiyarns Knits has allowed us to offer her pattern 'Aviator' for free with our variegated (multi-dyed) yarns. Picture below-right is of Wei Siew's daughter wearing 'Aviator' and using our Mossy 8-Ply 100%-alpaca yarn.  Basically Aviator is a combined scarf and hat so the legs of the scarf can hang or wrap-around the wearers neck ... so avoiding any draughts!  Gorgeous ... and requires about 150 grams of alpaca yarn!  Select this link for details of the yarns!

Innovation Day at Invermay, Mosgiel
6 July 2011

Andy attended the recent Innovation Day hosted by AgResearch and Meat + Wool New Zealand.  The day included presentations by the Venison Board, with coverage on associated progress in the venison marketing structures, deer ABVs and health issues.

It was highlighted that Coastal Oatgo was seeing high intetinal parasite burderns amongst deer stock after the wet autumn and lack of cold weather in May/June.  A warning to all local alpaca breeders that we will likely be sharing that burden in our herds.

It was interesting hearing the DeerSMART breed values development work in its infancy.  Our own EBV (Alpaca Genetic Evaluation - AGE) statistical modle in alpacas has been going for 6 years so is significantly more mature than that of the deer industry.  But the uptake amongst alpaca breeders remains low.  This poor continuation of the AGE reporting by breeders highlighted the concern of the venison group in that cost may be a barrier to DeerSMART progress in its infancy!  This showed issues in sister agricultural sectors are reflected in, or by, other sectors, small or large.

Alpaca - herb pastures
30 June 2011

We have been asked on two occassions recently about herb mixes suited to alpacas in pastures. We have run a chichory - plantain mix in several of our home paddocks and the details of that non-rye grass mix are available at CRT Dunedin.  For fairly compehensive comment see the 'Lifestyler' magazine article in its edition of November 2010.

NZ Alpaca Conference - Website Offer
29 June 2011

One keynote speaker at the Alpaca Conference talked about websites. Pricing and content management were the key themes from questions by delegates. I would comment our own website provider has just offered an introductory website package with a free advertising bundle: www.logicstudio.co.nz/odt . Logic Studio also does the Alpaca Conference stud auction fund raiser.

I'd comment when ones site is set-up you just run it using a Word document format so not complex at all to update the site with script and pictures. And our site includes a 'shopping cart' feature so we sell our alpaca products through it. Again, easy to update with new product.

Just a thought for those delegates and new breeders looking to set-up their own website and, as speaker said, regularly manage your own content.

FLEECE PLEASE! NZ Alpaca Conference
14 June 2011

23 February 2011

Pleased to say we will be supporting the Lions Club organised Farmarama in Lawrence, Central Otago, New Zealand on Thursday 24 February (starts 11am) and Friday 25th Feb (starts 9am).  We were missed the map for Farmarama in the 'Otago Southland Farmer' rural paper but we are behind the giant CRT site and tent, and the Prattley's site .... with our alpacas and our alpaca goodies!  Or should we say CRT are behind us?

Weather forecast looking better than the overcast weather on 23 Feb!  We have seberal items in the charity auction for the Otago Westpac Rescue Helicopter Appeal at the end of Farmarama, as do a number of other exhibitors!

OPEN DAY and the Taeiri Spinners & Weavers - 2 March 2011
14 February 2011

The Taieri Spinners & Weavers are visiting Flagstaff Alpacas for a public Open Day on Wednesday 2nd March (10am to 4.30pm) to look at the properties of alpaca fleece and yarn on a day themed as ‘Working with Alpaca’. In the morning the main speaker is Doe Arnot will be talking about alpaca fibre characteristics, fibre preparation, carding, spinning and dyeing alpaca as well as tips and discussion on weaving, felting, crocheting and knitting alpaca yarns.

The talk is an extension of Doe’s new book ‘Spinning Camelid Fibre’ and the morning presentations are designed to weave their way through the alpaca themes in that book.  Doe’s magical fingers and thoughts should deliver the key outcome from her book namely that the ‘secrets and delights’ of camelid and alpaca fleece do come from both new and old techniques. The Taieri Spinners and Weavers have organised samples of alpaca huacaya and suri raw fleece to develop their own alpaca ideas from the presentations.

After the opportunity to lunch on the lawn the afternoon is focused on more casual visits around the farm to look at the shearing shed, at fibre collected from the 2010 season, the management of the shearing area, and the preliminary skirting and storage techniques suited to preserving alpaca at its best.  There will be some alpacas on hand to meet and greet, as well as lead, and discussion of the importance of the quality of shearing to get the best of alpaca fleece from the entire animal.

Everyone is welcome to attend with more details available from Flagstaff Alpacas.

Waiting for New Cria!
14 February 2011

The mixed weather here through New Zealand has us waiting for a number of cria arrivals - with several girls now in-excess of 360 days since last matings! Good thing too ... the weather is not ideal for new arrivals - we had another 18mm of rain overnight - so best wait for "typical" Dunedin sunshine????
